Playing two matches in 24 hours is a challenge, so when Winchester and Reading's girls' soccer teams faced off yesterday after both played - and won - Friday, the Sachems' coach was concerned fatigue would be a factor.
"We probably finished at 5:30 [Friday] and we had to play at 10 this morning," Winchester coach Chris Scanlon said after his team's 2-0 win. "It's funny, against Stoneham we only scored one goal but because of the rainout we hadn't played since last Saturday. I thought we were kind of flat [Friday], so it might have helped playing again [yesterday] because the soccer rhythm was still with us."
That rhythm would help Winchester in the first half as the Sachems sprinted to a 2-0 lead on goals by Madeliene Quinn and Kaitlin McHugh.
"Both goalies played extremely well, so that kept the score down," Scanlon said.
Senior captain Michele Troisi made two saves to record the shutout, the Sachems' fourth in as many games. Winchester has outscored its opponents, 18-0.
Boys' soccerBay State : Kyle Cronin scored and Nick Patten stopped six shots as Weymouth beat Brookline , 1-0.
Nonleague: Sean Reilly's late goal enabled Arlington (2-1-1) to earn a 1-1 tie with Malden Catholic (1-0-3) . . . Ali Olia's two goals and two assists lifted Masconomet past Gloucester, 5-3.
Girls' soccerCatholic Central: Freshmen Jackie Shaw and Jackie Mahar scored in Austin Prep's 4-0 victory Pope John.
Dual County : Elizabeth Alexander's goal propelled Wayland past Tyngsboro, 2-1.
Nonleague: Chrissy Grant scored and added an assist, and Hannah Kincaid stopped eight shots for West Bridgewater (3-0) in its 3-1 victory over Bridgewater-Raynham (2-1).
